Custom Website vs WordPress: Which Is Right for You?

An honest comparison of custom-coded websites and WordPress, covering speed, security, cost, editing and ownership, so you can choose the right build.

Custom Website vs WordPress: Which Is Right for You? — Curious House insights

WordPress runs a huge share of the web, so it is the default choice for a lot of businesses. We build custom-coded websites instead, and we get asked why all the time. This is our honest comparison. WordPress is not bad; it is just not always the right tool.

What we mean by "custom website" and "WordPress"

A WordPress website is built on the WordPress CMS, usually with a theme and plugins for forms, SEO, caching and e-commerce. Page builders such as Elementor let you drag and drop layouts.

A custom website is designed from scratch for your business and built with modern web code. We use Next.js and React. Content is managed through a lightweight CMS, so you can still edit pages and blog posts yourself, but there is no theme or plugin stack underneath.

Speed and performance

WordPress can be fast, but many sites are not: every plugin adds code and database queries. Custom-coded sites only load what they need and can be pre-rendered as static files, which helps Core Web Vitals and keeps visitors on the page.

Security and maintenance

WordPress is a big target for automated attacks, and most vulnerabilities come from outdated plugins and themes. A custom site with pre-rendered pages has a smaller attack surface and lighter ongoing maintenance.

Design and flexibility

Themes are quick to set up but restrictive. Custom sites are designed around your customers and goals, with one consistent design system rather than fighting a template.

Editing your content

WordPress's editor is familiar and flexible. A headless CMS on a custom site is simpler: only the fields you need, which makes it harder to accidentally break the layout.

SEO

SEO plugins help on WordPress, but bloated themes and slow load times can hold rankings back. On custom builds, technical SEO is built in: clean URLs, metadata, structured data, XML sitemaps and fast Core Web Vitals.

Cost and ownership

WordPress is often cheaper to launch, but premium plugins, themes and maintenance add up. Custom sites usually have a higher upfront investment (ours start from £2,000) with fewer licence fees over three to five years. See our UK website cost guide for the full breakdown.

So which should you choose?

WordPress may be right if you publish a lot of content with several editors, need a specific WordPress plugin ecosystem, or need a template on a tight budget for now.

A custom website is probably right if your site needs to win you work, you want strong security without constant plugin updates, you want a design that fits your brand exactly, or you are planning booking, portals or integrations.

Why we build custom

We have seen too many small businesses stuck with slow, plugin-heavy WordPress sites that break every few months. We build clean, custom-coded websites that are faster, more secure and built for one business only: yours.
